Introduction to the Emergency First Aid at Work Course
This Emergency First Aid at Work Level 3 (VTQ) qualification (EFAW) is a requirement in most circumstances under The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.
Why enrol on the Emergency First Aid at Work Course?
Having this vital skill set within the workforce is crucial, as it ensures that employees’ health and welfare are accommodated. Additionally, it is a legal requirement in most workplaces, which should be highlighted during a first aid needs assessment. This assessment also determines the provisions necessary for the first aiders in their specific workplace.
First Aid Overview
The duration for the Emergency First Aid at Work Course is 1 day. This covers a variety of topics such as the roles and responsibilities of the emergency first aider, incident assessment, and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. Furthermore, it involves assisting a casualty who is suffering from injury or illness. Assessment of the qualification occurs through ongoing oral and/or written questioning and practical demonstration.
The minimum contact hours for this qualification, excluding breaks should be a minimum of 6 hours, over 1 day period.
Combined First Aid Courses
This course may be combined with another first aid course which has the same or similar course curriculum.
Certification
All successful students will receive a Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate, which outlines their achievement.
The HSE states that the emergency first aiders must undergo the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification within three years of achieving the original certification for the qualification to remain valid in the workplace.
Additionally, it’s important to note that all our first aid courses align fully with the UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2021, meeting the standards required by the HSE.
Additional Information
The HSE strongly recommends that all first aiders complete the First Aid Annual Refresher course every year to maintain competence of first aiders. This course is available through e-Learning.
However, please note that the classroom course requires participants to be at least 14 years old.
It may be the case you require the First Aid at Work (FAW), depending on your first aid needs assessment.

Who should do this Course?
The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course is the minimum standard requirement for most workplaces. Workplaces should carry out a first aid needs assessment, which identifies the necessary provisions for the first aiders.
While different industries have various hazards, EFAW alone usually suffices for low-risk working environments like offices. However, if certain areas involve higher-risk activities such as machining or using abrasive wheels, additional training may be necessary.
For instance, workers may need training in handling life-threatening bleeding (catastrophic bleeding), especially when machinery could cause amputation under unsafe conditions.
However, specific activities prone to high-risk injuries may need additional training. It’s vital to tailor training to specific requirements where possible.
If you have any questions about your requirements, please contact us through our Contact Us page.

What is a Combined Course?
Some first aid courses offer the option to combine or overlap them, especially when they share similar curriculum.
For instance, consider a scenario where a First Aid at Work Course spans over 3 consecutive days to obtain the qualification. However, individuals seeking only the Emergency First Aid at Work certification can attend day 1 of the course to achieve the EFAW qualification.
Additionally, we also offer combined Paediatric First Aid courses, which may extend the training time slightly.
It’s important to note that the report and finish times of the course details during the booking process will accurately reflect any combined training.
When will I receive my Certificate?
Certificates as standard are digitally sent via email.
However, this can take up to 3 working days after course completion.
